The City of Los Angeles’ anonymous Gun Buyback is an annual initiative led by GRYD in partnership with the Los Angeles Police Department. Launched in the spring of 2009, the Gun Buyback marks the beginning of the City of Los Angeles summer violence reduction strategy. It has served as both a community awareness and education campaign, and is aimed at raising the public’s awareness about gangs and gun violence, as well as calling public attention to legislative proposals calling for tougher gun laws.
The event is held at designated locations that are considered neutral ground where the public can safely surrender their weapons to law enforcement. In exchange for surrendering a firearm, an individual receives a gift card. Participants drive through the collection line, firearms are inspected and classified by LAPD and assigned a dollar value (depending on weapon type and condition). Participants then have the option of completing an anonymous survey and receive a gift card in the amount assigned by LAPD.
